Stainless Steel Grades Overview

Stainless steel wire rope products are commonly manufactured using Type 304 and Type 316 stainless steel, depending on the required corrosion resistance and application environment.

Type 302 / 304 Stainless Steel

“Type 302/304 stainless steel is the standard material used for wire rope and cable applications. It offers strength comparable to galvanized steel rope while providing significantly better corrosion resistance.

It is widely used in fasteners, fittings, and general industrial applications. Type 304 performs well in most atmospheric conditions and provides acceptable corrosion resistance in marine and saltwater environments. Its low carbon content also makes it suitable for welding applications.”

Type 316 Stainless Steet

Type 316 stainless steel is a high corrosion-resistant grade commonly used for wire rope and cable in more demanding environments. It offers excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, making it suitable for industries such as pulp and paper, food processing, photographic, and textile applications.Due to the addition of 2.0–3.0% molybdenum, Type 316 provides superior pitting resistance in marine and saltwater environments. It also maintains good mechanical strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures.
